In jedem Jahr bricht das 24 Stunden Rennen auf der rund 25 Kilometer langen Strecke die Rekorde, sowohl auf, als auch neben dem Asphalt. “For me, this is the greatest victory,” said Olaf Manthey after his Porsche GT3-RSR had crossed the finish line as the overall winner in the ADAC Zurich 24-hour race for the fourth time in a row. “No matter how old I get, this can’t be topped!” After a thrilling and action-packed battle twice around the clock in front of the record crowd of 235,000 spectators, Timo Bernhard, Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas and Marcel Tiemann had an advantage of one lap over the Abt-Audi R8 LMS, drive by Christian Abt, Jean-Francois Hemroulle, Pierre Kaffer and Lucas Luhr.

There were 23 overall lead changes, and the first four cars within five minutes with only four and a half hours to go. Then, a wheel bearing of the Poenix-Audi broke while in the lead and a drive shaft hose had to be replaced on the second Manthey-Porsche. With a race distance of 3933.59 kilometres, the winners improved the old record from the year 2006 by 101 kilometres.

Practice already provided plenty of action: with Ford, Porsche and Audi, there were three different brands on the first three places. In the race, pole-sitter Dirk Adorf (Ford GT) and Marc Lieb staged a thrilling race, one of the most exciting opening hours in history of marathon. Adorf led the way for five laps, but collided with an M3 at Hohe Acht, spun and was able to continue after brief contact with the barriers. At 4.30 am, the Ford GT having made its way up into fifth place again, suffered a broken oil pump which caused an engine failure.

One of the biggest surprises was fourth place overall for the Monster-GT3 Cup entered by Uwe Alzen. “We don’t have a chance against the RSRs and Cup-S cars, but we want to make the best of it,” said the German before the start, and so he did. Volkswagen Motorsport showed that one can have big success with a Scirocco: the best-placed fuel-powered car ended up 15^th overall and the fastest natural-gas-powered entry only completed two laps less, ending up 17^th.

For former Tour de France-winner Jan Ullrich, achieving his goal of making it to the finish will have to wait another year. Numerous technical problems on the BMW 335d slowed him down and gearbox failure in the early morning hours put an untimely end to his race.

Of course, there is also ample coverage of all the action off the track. For six days, 235,000 spectators celebrated a great motorsport party alongside the 25.378 kilometre track, including the traditional parade on Wednesday, the Adenauer Racing Day and the drivers’ parade.
